Chex Systems
Chex Systems is a comapany that manages a list of people who have had a bad credit history with bank accounts, notably checking accounts. Almost all the banks use this in order to look up a potential customer’s history. For the most part, everyone who is on this list is going to be denied a new checking account, and the chances of getting a regular account with a bank that uses chexsystems is almost zero. While most banks use chexsystems, there is a good handful of non chexsystems banks out there. That means that you are still going to be able to get a checking account. The worst case scenario for you is that you might have to get a checking account that requires a small monthly fee to keep it open. As far as a savings account goes, it is easy to get. The account you would be denied to most is a checking account. Non Chex Systems Banks simply do not check it when opening an account for a new customer. That does not mean that they do no background checks. It is possible that they will pull your credit report instead. If they pull your credit report and it is decent you are on your way to getting a new checking account.
If you made it onto the Chex Systems list, you need to work on getting your name removed. If you do nothing, your name will remain on Chex Systems for 5 years. The first thing to do is pay any money you owe your previous banks. You can also file a dispute on any errors made on your Chex Systems report. You can receive a free copy of this report just like a credit report. You get one free report each year. Before you pay the money owed to your bank, you should talk with them about removing your name from the Chexsystems list for paying your debt back. Some banks might play tough and not agree to do that.
